Biography Dieter Waeckerlin
After completing an apprenticeship as a carpenter and an internship in interior design in Basel, Dieter Waeckerlin (1930–2013) worked for the family-owned Roser carpentry business and Idealheim furniture store. He was fascinated by the principle of the furniture system. With the Basel-based Idealheim company and his own DW collection, he was one of the most internationally successful Swiss furniture designers between 1950 and 1980. Waeckerlin was a pioneer of digital design and the first Swiss designer to create his furniture using CAD, starting in 1986. His innovative thinking and working with digital drawings, models, and drafts opened up new design possibilities for him. Waeckerlin also enjoyed widespread recognition in Germany from the 1950s to the 1970s, where his products were included in the collections of leading furniture companies such as Behr International, WK-Wohnen, and Walter Knoll.
