DESIGN 1956

Designer: Robert Haussmann
Year and place of origin: 1956 | Zurich
Year of creation and place of Edition 01: 2025 | Switzerland & Europe

The stacking table reflects the innovative and purist approach that runs like a thread through Robert Haussmann`s work. Haussmann designed it in 1956 for "Swiss Design," the collective he co-founded, which succeeded in transforming the visions of the Bauhaus movement into its own furniture classics.

The collection, which also included the stacking table, quickly became a best-seller and export hit. The model consists of three small tables, identical in height, width, and length, with offset metal legs that can be combined to form an elongated lounge table. They can be easily disassembled, packed for space-saving storage, and shipped.
Biography Robert Haussmann
In the 1950s, Robert Haussmann (1931–2021) attended the interior design class at the Zurich School of Applied Arts under Willy Guhl, Wilhelm Kienzle, and Johannes Itten, and moved in the circles of Sigfried Giedion and Hans Arp. At just 27 years old, he founded the "SwissDesign" collective with Teo Jakob, Hans Eichenberger, Kurt Thut, and Alfred Hablützel, which made him known as far afield as America.

He first met his wife Trix on the planning team for Expo 64. Together, they founded their own architectural firm in 1967. Numerous of their designs for manufacturers such as Röthlisberger, de Sede, Wogg, and Knoll became design classics. The couple`s diverse oeuvre includes Zurich architectural projects such as the Kronenhallenbar, the Lanvin boutique, and the underground facilities at Zurich Central Station, as well as plans and buildings in Hamburg and Berlin. Trix and Robert Haussmann are probably Switzerland’s most internationally renowned architect and designer couple.
